Downspout Drain Repair and Replacement

By far the most common excavation project in Central Ohio. The common issue with Central Ohio downspout drainage systems are they are no codes or inspections needed for downspout drains or sump pump discharge lines. Because of this leniency and due to the rapid rate at which new homes have been constructed in central Ohio in the last few decades, we have received a near constant stream of calls regarding downspout drainage issues. 

With every dollar counting in the bidding war that is the residential new construction market, corners are cut where ever possible, especially in areas that will receive no inspection. Contractors choose cheap and fast laborers to install thin wall pipe that is never glued together, nor is it given adequate downhill grade to allow for proper drainage. The result is an invitation for roots to enter the pipe to find a permanent source of water at every fitting. This causes backups on rainy days and can be spotted afterwards by mulch washed away from around the spout entrance.

What Are Downspout Drains?

Also referred to as rain drains. They are the pieces of piping that take water from your downspout and get it away from the house. They are underground and tend to get clogged very easily. They get filled with organic material that runs right off the roof. Twigs, leaves, and mud can all get in there and block everything up. Not only that, but little creatures like frogs and rats love to make their way in there too and make a mess of everything.

Downspouts function by channeling water away from your home. A normal rainfall will cause thousands of gallons of water to fall on your roof. Gutters catch the water and funnel it to the downspouts. The downspouts carry the water away from your home to prevent pooling in and around your foundation. If you have underground lines, they continue to carry water away from your home toward a trench, basin, or drain.

The downspout and drain tile are the most important pipes in a rainwater drain system. When these pipes become cracked or broken, water collects at the base of your home. This water then seeps into your basement walls, causing property damage and mold. Your downspout drains can also easily become clogged with tree roots, leaves, roofing material and soil. Over time, underground lines can break down or house-mounted lines can become disconnected
