How To Check Your Sump Pump
You can test your sump pump by running water through it. Fill your sump pit with enough water to raise the float until the pump kicks on. If you’re filling the pit and the water level gets near the top of the pit, but the pump doesn’t activate, you may have a bad switch. If the pump does activate, it should lower the water level in the pit, removing almost all of the water.
If you’re not able to add water to the pump, you can lift the float arm up and see if the pump turns on. The method will not confirm water will actually be pumped out of the pit unless it is holding at the time of the test.
How To Check Your Sump Pump
Any hole dug deep into the earth is bound to filter in water, especially when it rains. Your basement is exactly that. A 7-foot-deep hole in the ground. Water will naturally try to fill this hole whether it's from a recent rain filtering down through the dirt or possibly just an unfortunately high water table around your home.
To combat this, we use nature against itself. By digging an even deeper hole and creating a path of least resistance by means of perforated drains under your basement floor, we lure the water into a trap. Once the water fills the sump pit enough to lift the float, a switch activates triggering an impeller in the sump pump to pull the water up and out of the pit through a sump discharge line and away from your home.
Why Does your Sump Pump run when your neighbor's does not?
The most likely cause is improper or malfunctioning drainage outside the home.
In nearly every instance around central Ohio, your sump pump discharge drain will exit your house and tie into the same drain your downspouts use. If you refer to our DOWNSPOUT DRAINAGE page you will find the common issues with these drains explained.
These same blockages keep your sump pump from pushing water all the way to the street. Have it instead overflow out of your drain connections, down the outside of your basement walls, and back into your sump pump. This creates a cycle of frequent pumping with only a small portion of the discharge water reaching the street.
Your neighbor, whose drains may be in better working order, will experience much less activity from his sump pump because the water flows naturally away from the house after being pumped.
With a little work, your system can be made to work just as well!

Although we do not recommend repairing the pump itself, your pump system may require maintenance such as leaks on discharge lines, malfunctioning check valves, or rocks stuck in impellers. All of these can be easily repaired with a quick service call by our trained professionals.
